Historic Restoration

Chatham Historic Preservation

Minglewood Homes has impeccably renovated 61 School Street, which was built in 1830.  Originally consisting of 1699 square foot of gross floor area, Minglewood Homes has tastefully renovated this property to include a three bedroom, two and a half bathroom main house, as well as restored the guest cottage on the property that was built in the 1940’s. We lifted both the original house and guest cottage replaced both of the foundations with full poured foundations, as both of the original foundations were in poor condition. Replacing all the windows in the home with historic six over six grill patterned windows, we removed the existing chimney and built a new chimney, removing the existing sun room and constructing a mahogany wrap around deck.  We installed a new kitchen, renovated the bathrooms, turning the former screen-in porch into living space. Historic details – wide pine floors, beamed and coffered ceilings, built in benches, wainscoting, and beautiful woodwork flow throughout the home. The first floor contains a master and ensuite with shower – as well as two closets, living room, dining room with fireplace, and open kitchen with a center island with granite counter tops. The second floor opens to a charming family room, two additional bedrooms, and a large bath. Minglewood Homes also rehabbed the one bedroom guest cottage on the property, adding historic touches to mimic the main house, including adding exposed wood beams, to mimic the living room ceiling in the main structure. For the most part, the exterior of the home stayed the same, replacing the existing side wall with white cedar, replacing the existing roof with red cedar. The front entrance roof was change to a hip roof, to keep with the historic feel of the time period.
